Packing a healthy lunch can at times seem overwhelming or time-consuming. Follow these 4 tips and you will have a healthy lunch that you are excited to eat!
- Make your lunch look appealing. Throwing a few pre-packaged items in a bag is quick and easy but does not make you excited to pull out your lunch at noon. Separating items so they don’t get jumbled together is a great way to add variety and excitement to your lunch. Try using compartmentalized lunch box containers to separate items. Choose a variety of colors and textures in your food to create something that is pleasing to look at!
- Include a simple appetizer. Pack a healthy quick appetizer and place this at the top of your lunch bag so that it is the first item you grab to eat. Choosing something like fresh cut veggies will help to stimulate a healthy appetite but will also help to keep your calories in check. By eating a healthy appetizer, you will likely end up eating fewer calories in the end.
- Choose whole grain products. There are many “light” versions of breads available however they often have preservatives added, they turn soggy quickly and also will not fill you up. Choosing whole grain breads will help you to feel full longer. Keep your bread fresh by adding condiments between sandwich ingredients instead of directly on the bread.
- Incorporate snack jars. Packing an afternoon snack is essential to healthy lunch – this will avoid an afternoon vending machine run! Try using small clear jars to pack healthy snacks. Yogurt with granola, peanut butter & apple slices or hummus/guacamole & veggies are a few great ideas to get you started.
Taking a few extra moments to thoughtfully pack your lunch will allow you to eat healthy, feel energized and be proud of your food choices. Happy lunch packing!
